Overview

Laminoplasty is a surgical procedure to decompress spinal nerves by removing a part of the lamina. Nerves typically get compressed at points where the spinal canal becomes narrow due to excess bone growth, spinal stenosis, or bone spurs.  Here is a detailed view of laminoplasty to better understand our laminoplasty treatment in Mumbai.

Understanding Laminoplasty

Our spine comprises of vertebral canal protected by intervertebral discs that absorb shock. Each vertebra is connected with a pair of lamina bones originating from its pendicles. The vertebrae and the laminae plates for a canal for spinal nerves. The canal is protected by vertebrae and lamina( a plate and protective covering to nerve) on the top.

Due to changes in the spine’s anatomy, such as bone spurs or spinal stenosis, the bone overgrowth intrudes the spinal canal, narrowing the space between eventually causing nerve impingement. The impingement and constriction of nerves are manifested in the symptoms such as back pain, muscular pain, constricted motion, etc.

Laminoplasty is typically performed in the cervical spine or the lumbar spine. First, a channel is created from either side of the spine to cut the lamina angularly, creating space for relieving the compression.  Next, the lamina is hinged and maintained in relaxed positions with sutures or metal hinges.

Conditions Treated By Laminoplasty Spine Surgery

The laminoplasty treatment in Mumbai is used in the effective treatment of the following spinal disorders:

  • Spinal stenosis– narrowing of the space in the spinal canal exerting pressure on nerve roots
  • Cervical spondylotic myelopathy– a  form of spinal cord compression due to degeneration or natural wear and tear
  • Spinal tumors–  abnormal growth of spine parts or tissues
  • Syringomyelia- fluid-filled cyst that formed in the spinal cord, constricting space and compressing nerves

Procedure Of Laminoplasty Treatment In Mumbai

In the procedure, our spinal surgeon makes one or two angular incisions on the back from either side of the spine, moving aside muscles and tissues to create a clear window for accessing the spine.

Next, the lamina, a protective bony arch on the spinal cord, is cut to allow vertebrae in the spine to open like a hinged door.  Furthermore, a  flap of bone is lifted using small bone wedges, maintaining the spine in shape and alignment.

The hinged part is maintained using sutures or metal implants and metal screws. This creates the necessary space in the protected spinal canal while the hinged part still covers and protects the nerve canal.

Finally, the incision is closed using sutures or tapes that dissolve in the skin.
